3 Ways to Make Social Media Work FOR Your Job Search - Workology

3 Ways to Make Social Media Work FOR Your Job Search Do searches on yourself to see what others might find Tools are amazing things. Having the right tool for the job can make all of the difference, but using the wrong tool can be a huge headache. Hammers are one example. Using a hammer with a nail is great, but using a hammer to drive a screw is not so good. Likewise, saws can be helpful, but in the hands of someone who is untrained or inexperienced, a saw can lead to damage or worse. LinkedIn,  Twitter  and even  Facebook  can be great tools in your job search if used appropriately.  Recent statistics show that over 500 million people use LinkedIn  and there are over 10 million job postings on this network. Twitter has over 320 million users  and the network continues to evolve. Facebook, with over 2 billion users,  launched a new tool for job seekers  earlier this year in an effort to be more relevant in the job search market. All of these tools are great, but there are problems. People use each of these networks in different ways. Many firms are using social media and search technology to see what their potential job candidates do outside of work and the number of firms who say they pass on candidates because of their social media presence continues to increase.  Hunt Scanlon shared information this week  that says over 54 percent of employers bypassed a prospect because of what they learned through social media. The article goes on to share more about employer usage of social media, so I am offering a few tips that will help job seekers. Do searches on yourself to see what others might find I would suggest using multiple search engines to do this (Google, Bing, etc.) and also use variations of your name and previous employers or organizations you might have been a part of. Even look for images or videos that might have your name attached. Be wary of others who have the same or similar name as yours. Even this can come back and bit you if you dont know what is there. Be cautious in what photos you share on any social network. Facebook is typically the biggest culprit here, but even photos on LinkedIn and Twitter can be problematic. You can say that your account represents your opinion, but if that opinion clashes with the culture of a prospective employer, the cards will not fall in your favor. Update your profiles often, especially your LinkedIn profile. I am always shocked by how lax many professionals are when managing their social media profiles. Many talent acquisition professionals check LinkedIn first and if your profile is lacking, your contacts will lag. You need to put your best foot, and face, forward when you have a social media account. I could offer more, but these three suggestions will keep most of you busy. Social media can slice both ways and you want to make sure that the cut falls in your favor. This piece was originally published on the SHRM Blog here. C-level Executives Resistant to Online Presence - Executive Career Brandâ„¢

C-level Executives Resistant to Online Presence Prior to first talking with a prospective customer, a c-level official in business land business advancement, I looked to check whether he had a total profile. Furthermore, I Googled his name to perceive what number of indexed lists related with him were on the initial not many pages. This is my standard practice before any underlying talk. Imprint's slapdash profile, which just contained his name, work titles, and instruction â€" no synopsis or supporting data â€" was his solitary query item on page one for my Google search of his name. This was his solitary quality query item on any of the initial a few pages. As we were talking about how we would cooperate on marking and pursuit of employment systems, he referenced that a selection representative contact forewarned him that he had Googled Marks name and concocted just a couple of query items. What does that let you know, Mark?, I inquired. He stated, Well, I surmise a couple of specialty talent scouts take a gander at whats online for individuals, so its getting increasingly mainstream, however it likely doesnt happen that regularly. I made him mindful that Googling expected up-and-comers, and looking through them on , was at that point an unavoidable practice among enrollment specialists and businesses employing leaders. At the point when we examined fabricating his online impression, he was safe. I dont think pretty much all that, he said. I wouldn't feel right having my name and things about me spread all around the spot. In his mind, profiles spoke to an acknowledged online nearness, so it approved of him and he figured he needed to have one. He said he didn't need or need whatever else. At the core of Mark's obstruction was simply the dread of presenting to the world. Be that as it may, his dread could drag out his pursuit of employment, rendering him almost undetectable to the very individuals whose radar he expected to jump on. Since he's not carefully particular, he risks being disregarded by employing specialists who source and evaluate solid match competitors dependent on what they find (or don't discover) about them on the web. What's more, with practically no online nearness supporting his image and ROI esteem, in their eyes he's not internet based life shrewd. They'll think about how well he's stayed aware of the new universe of work and business. I would say, there are still a great deal of top-level officials who are impervious to (or dont see the requirement for) having an online character past their profiles. I expounded on this longer than a year back on my Executive Resume Branding blogsite. At that point, I was explicitly observing a ton of protection from , which no longer is by all accounts the case. As for Mark's situation, the majority of the top-level executives I talk with nowadays realize they need a profile, yet regularly need assistance marking it and completely fleshing it out. Imprint and I talked about conceivable online personality building choices and systems that might be a solid match for him â€" Google and other online profiles, composing book audits on Amazon, blog remarking, and so forth â€" and I guided him to my posts: Does Your Online Identity Scream Hire Me? 10 Ways to Build Your Personal Brand Online Without a Blog Expand Your Executive Brand Online with the 6 P's 00 0
