The first few weeks provide thorough classroom instruction on Diving Physics, Diving Medicine, and SCUBA Fundamentals. After that, the training moves into the pool where standard procedures are taught and reinforced. For SCUBA students the final week before graduation is spent training in open-water. After graduation, SCUBA students will spend a couple of days (depending on the number of Coast Guard students in the class) on Coast Guard specific training with dry suits, full-face masks, lightweight surface-supplied diving equipment and lift bags. For Basic Diving Officer and Deep-Sea Diving Medical Technicians, the course proceeds after SCUBA into Surface-Supplied Air Diving Procedures, Advanced Diving Medicine, Advanced Physics, Hyperbaric Chamber Operations, and basic Underwater Ships Husbandry. Polar Icebreakers Polar Icebreakers operate in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, providing logistics and dedicated science support to scientific research missions. In the Arctic, the Icebreakers serve as a research platform, taking teams of scientists as far as the North Pole, through ice conditions that would make those places unreachable by standard research vessels. In the Antarctic, the Icebreakers create a channel through the ice into McMurdo Sound in order to allow cargo ships to resupply the science station with fuel, food, and materials. The duties of polar icebreaker divers include providing scientists dive support to take still and video images and collect samples of various organisms and objects beneath polar iceconducting underwater ship husbandry, including running gear and hull inspections, propeller cleanings and propeller pitch calibrationslocating objects underwater most units are equipped with some salvage equipment and may be able to raise large objects Fourteenth District Buoy Tenders Buoy tenders maintain aids to navigation (ATON), conduct search and rescue and handle law enforcement. The highly mobile nature of the diving team allows for rapid response to ATON discrepancies throughout the Central and Western Pacific Ocean. With the aid of a small boat, the diving team can inspect and (if necessary) lift or reposition an aid of any size. Divers are also able to work on aids in restricted or shallow wa ter where it is unsafe to take the cutter. Buoy tenders conduct extensive, independent ATON operations requiring minimal support. Divers can inspect moorings, change out buoys, salvage sunken buoys, and lift buoy sinkers. Most ATON diving is conducted from small boats, allowing the dive team to work ATON in shallow water where a cutter would be at risk. Maritime Safety and Security Teams These divers provide waterborne and shoreside anti-terrorism/force protection for strategic shipping, high-interest vessels, and critical infrastructure. MSSTs are a quick response force capable of rapid, nationwide deployment via air, ground or sea transportation. Diving teams provide an underwater inspection capability for ships and port facilities.

How to Successfully Work Abroad -The Muse

How to Successfully Work Abroad -The MuseHow to Successfully Work Abroad Do you daydream about working abroad? We get it. Working abroad is the best of both worlds you can grow your career while embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure in a new place. Many of us dream of making that kind of move, but feel intimidated by the idea of not only finding the right job in the right place, but also taking the major step of building a life and career in a different country. We spoke to Anna Bertoldini, who grew up in Venice, Italy and studied in the United States and Austria before working abroad in Budapest, Hungary as an Employer Brand Content Coordinator at BlackRock. Having lived in five countries, Bertoldini is an expert in adapting to new cultures. Read about her experiences and then put your dreams into motion.Do Your ResearchThe world is a big place, and there are so many locations where you can build your career. In deciding where you want to work, zoom out and consider the kind of experience youd like to haveIs there a region of the world youve always wanted to explore? What kind of day-to-day lifestyle are you looking for?Is there a particular climate you prefer? How comfortable are you navigating life in a new language? If youre already working for an international organization, research office locations in areas youre interested in moving to. If you want to change gears, look into companies that align with your ideal experience.Bertoldini recommends visiting the place youre interested in moving to if its feasible. She visited Budapest on vacation and loved the citys vibrant culture and beautiful neighborhoods. But remember that working in a country or city is not the same as vacationing there. While hitting the tourist hot spots is great, try to explore neighborhoods where the locals live, visit grocery stores, and sit in restaurants. Then you can do one better and speak to other expats who live there to get a sense of what day-to-day life is like. And if your e seriously considering making a move, take a deeper dive into the culture. Bertoldini recommends watching documentaries, reading articles about the city, learning basic phrases in the language, and even researching commutes.Move for the Company, Not Just the PlaceBertoldini was impressed by BlackRocks Budapest office, but mora importantly, the position was the right fit. And the mora research Bertoldini did, the more convinced she was that BlackRock was the right company to make the move with. While the Budapest office has a distinct culture and feel, the work being done there ties into the work of BlackRock as a larger firm- allowing Bertoldini to experience the best of both worlds. And not only was the position a great fit, but so was the culture at BlackRock Budapest. The office has a startup feel with a focus on intellectual curiosity, innovation, and challenging the status quo- a uniquely great fit for someone building a life and career in a new country. While BlackRock Budape st started with a humble beginning, they experienced tremendous growth, but managed to stay true to their commitments to diversity as well as to the Hungarian business community. BlackRock has become a thought leader in Hungary, participating in events such as the OPEN Conference, a diversity iniative founded in Hungary, and Brainbar, where guests can interact with speakers to debate big questions concerning the future. As tempting as it is to move to a beautiful place for the location and lifestyle, dont do it at the cost of your career. Theres nothing worse than moving to a country for a job you end up hating, especially if your legal status depends on an employer-sponsored visa.Be proactive about researching the reputation of any company youre considering. Before an interview, prepare a list of questions about the companys working language, processes, and culture. And remember, current employees can be a great source of intel.Prepare for Growing PainsAs exciting as it is to move a nd work abroad, such monumental change can also bring on waves of anxiety. Although she has extensive experience with the logistical drama of moving and starting a new life in a different city or country, Bertoldini recognized that each country has different traditions- and wasnt sure how she would adapt. I wish I wouldnt have worried so much about coming to Budapest, I was really stressing myself out, she says. When you start to get pulled into anxious thoughts, remind yourself that its natural to go through growing pains, especially during times of transition. Take time to learn and remember to forgive yourself, lots of things are new and integration is a slow process- it takes time, Bertoldini adds. When you live and work abroad, culture shock is a very real thing. Routines and cultural norms you take for granted dont exist in other countries. Instead of fighting against them, recognize the benefit of a different way of doing things- learn new customs and challenge yourself to adap t to different business practices.Bertoldini recommends you break through the culture shock by being open and asking lots of questions, which signals to your colleagues that youre interested in their culture and willing to adapt. Most people, she says, really appreciate the effort and are more than happy to explain the ins and outs of their culture, so dont be shy. Build a CommunityAny time you move somewhere new, you need to invest in building a community, and working abroad is no exception. It takes about 40-60 hours to become friends, so you need to spend a lot of time inside and outside of the office to forge a bond.Dont be afraid to make the first move. In the beginning, I was always the one walking up to colleagues and asking them about after-work or weekend plans, says Bertoldini. But as I started to get to know more people, they began to welcome me into their circles and invite me to go out with them.Beyond work colleagues, Bertoldini also tapped into Facebook groups and Mee tups, which enabled her to meet fellow expats embracing life in a new culture. The time, energy, and commitment more than paid off- after nine months in Budapest, Bertoldini now has a wonderful network of friends and colleagues, and she plans on staying.Working abroad can open up countless new personal and professional adventures and opportunities. If you can grow your career in a great role and build an enriching life in a new culture, the skys the limit.

If Work is so Ennobling, Why is it the Last Thing the Nobility Ever Does If work is so ennobling, why is it the last thing the nobility ever does? Thats on my short list for the best line ever in a movie (as I recall it). The film was For Richer or Poorer (1992), with Jack Lemmon, who portrayed Aram Katourian, a self-made, sleeve-rolling millionaire, whose spoiled, recently graduated son Michael (Jonathan Silverman) just cant seem to budge from poolside to do anything except get another Margarita or play tennis with another mini-skirted girl.Michael made and scored a point with that one Really, how can work be ennobling if nobility avoids it like the other plagues they historically had to dodge? When they have the talk, Jack suggests to his son that he should be thinking about a career, because work is ennobling. Thats when the son tossed off that sizzling throwaway line. For me, that was on a par with its Latin equivalent that I once stumbled across (indeed, stumbled across, since I have never studied Latin) otium cum dignitateleisure with dignity. Nice resonance, that one has. Thats on my short lists for the best Latin lines and life game plans ever. What, Exactly, is Noble?Michaels point can be recast as several, the first of which is this If work and its fruits are not what the nobility contribute, what is it exactly that its members do to justify their existence or the title/epithet noble? My favorite guess regarding justification of their existence is this They have built opulent castles, mansions and other over-sized accommodation so that the rest of us will have something interesting to photograph and (pay to) visit during our travels. Think of that as a form of public service.A second implied point in the form of a question is exactly how is work ennobling, even if the nobility doesnt think so or exemplify the wisdom of that claim? If that question is purely rhetorica l, the implied point is that work isnt ennobling at all.To answer it, we have to take a close look at the root idea of nobility, specifically the quality of being noble. The latter is defined in each of the following ways1. having eminence, renown, fame, etc. illustrious2. having or showing high moral qualities or ideals, or greatness of character lofty3. having excellent qualities superior4. grand stately splendid magnificent a noble view5. of high hereditary rank or title aristocratic 6. chemically nonreactiveTo the extent that Michael is unresponsive and unengaged, it might be argued that he is already noble, like one of the noble metals, e.g., gold, which is precious, in part, precisely because it reacts to and with nothing. Like noble gold, Michael can just stay put and protected as a family investment (the only difference between ones son and ones gold being that your neighbors will covet your gold, but not your kids).A case can also be made for his being noble in the same way as each of the noble gases, such as heliumnamely, by being inert, i.e., again, reacting with and to nothing.High hereditary rank or title as meriting the epithet noble seems to disqualify work, since such elevated rank usually precludes both the necessity and appeal of work. But since Michael is behaving as though he is entitled to his leisured poolside existence in virtue of being his rich fathers son, he is tacitly laying claim to a hereditary title in the making. Hence, hes, once again, already noble.Having excellent qualities does characterize both many kinds of work and many workers, but not all, since, if it did, lazy, irresponsible worker would be a contradiction, which it is not. Besides, how could Michael attract so many babes if he didnt have some excellent qualities, e.g., being well-educated. Therefore, it can be argued that whereas not all work is noble or ennobling, he, despite his unemployed and unengaged state, already is noble and ennobled.Having or showing high mo ral qualities or ideals, or greatness of character lofty, surely does characterize many jobs and those who perform them, but again, not allunless wanting to feed, clothe and house oneself counts as a lofty ambition. So, Jacks pitch for ennobling work is at best a half-or-less-truth. Besides, given enough time at poolside, anyone could find some alternative, less laborious way to bildschirm high moral qualities, ideals or greatness of character, e.g., a profound commitment to always telling the truth, especially about ones resistance to working.Having eminence, renown, fame, etc. illustrious doesnt make the cut either, since the vast majority of jobs and the performance of them hardly offer or achieve any of these, not to mention all of them.A Fathers Fallacy This latter observation points out the fallacy in Jacks thinking Work being neither a sufficient nor a necessary condition for ennoblement, Michael has a lot of logical wiggle room to wriggle out of job hunting. Hence, work is e nnobling, despite its noble tone, just doesnt hold up to logical scrutiny and definitely loses its punch when phrased more precisely, e.g., as work is sometimes ennobling, but is not necessary to become anyone or to accomplish anything noble. So, if that kind of father-son talk is going to accomplish anything, the approach and central concept are going to have to be different. Fortunately, that is as easily done as said, with only a minor tweaking of the concept of ennobling being required.Change the pitch from work is ennobling to work is enablingsince all work enables us to eat, dress and stay out of the rain.___________________PHOTO Stirling Castle, Scotland/by Michael Moffa

Book recommended; easy path chosen

Book recommended easy path chosenBook recommended easy path chosenMark Herrmann, Jones Day partner and author of the terrific The Curmudgeons Guide to Practicing Law, sounds out on what hes learned in a year of blogging. His take on the benefits of serious blawging is mildly interesting, but what caught our eye was his sideswipe at presumably lazier bloggers like AbovetheLaws David Lat (and us)First, bloggingor, at a minimum, blogging about substantive legal issuesis hard. Perhaps its easy to host a blog that simply pokes fun at current events by commenting on, and linking to, the news of the day. I wouldnt know Ive never done that.OuchAs folks who have done a bit of that, we can assure readers that fun-poking is not always as easy as it looks. Besides, even the curmudgeonly Hermann would likely concede that not all blogs canor shouldbe as deeply serious as one that addresses various topics that arise in the defense of pharmaceutical and medical device product liability litigation.I m ean, where else can lawyers read and share their views about Denim Day?- posted by brian vera

What You Can Do in Q4 to Pave the Way for 2018 Hiring Success

What You Can Do in Q4 to Pave the Way for 2018 Hiring SuccessWhat You Can Do in Q4 to Pave the Way for 2018 Hiring SuccessWhat You Can Do in Q4 to Pave the Way for 2018 Hiring Success RossheimIs your company planning to grow next year? Any expansion will likely require an expanded team headcount and an evolving mix of jobs skills. Heres the good news the fourth quarter of the year is the time to lay the groundwork for successful and timely recruitment of the right talent for the year ahead. To give you a head start, weve spoken with recruiters and other workforce experts. Their tactics will help you recruit the talent needed for success in the coming year.Improve recruitment results with enterprise-wide workforce planning. More and more, companies of all sizes are rejiggering their talent acquisition practices by soliciting input from people all over the organization, from line-of-business managers, to rank-and-file workers, to C-suite executives. The organizations that get good result s have refined, organization-wide workforce planning processes that give them more lead time on hiring, says Elissa Tucker principal researcher for human capital management at APQC, a non-profit benchmarking and best practices research firm.Leverage data to win the attention of your product-line managers. Would you like to persuade managers to contribute to workforce strategy earlier in the planning cycle? Show them the data average tenure in key roles, how much attrition can be expected in 2018, and so on.Analytics is a door opener, says Tucker. Analytics gets the attention of line-of-business managers with regard to workplace planning and their role in it.Increase the frequency of all-hands workforce planning check-ins. Your organizations ideal talent mix changes continually, so its arbitrary and ill-advised to make a plan only once a year and set it in stone. Recognizing this, more and more organizations are checking in with all workforce stakeholders at least quarterly, Tucker s ays.Plan all your early 2018 hires before Thanksgiving 2017. Dont wait for New Years to get specific about your hiring plans for the early months of the year. Take the first steps now to avoid getting caught flat-footed mid-winter.A lot of candidates dont make moves during the holidays, so we start talking about January hires around Thanksgiving, says Juli Santiago, a vice president at Search Max.Scope out regulatory changes scheduled throughout 2018. With the changeover of White House administrations, Federal labor regulations are in flux. Your organization must keep on top of pending changes at the national level, but also keep abreast of proliferating state and local changes. For example, starting in October 2017, in New York City, we can only ask candidates about target salary range, not their current salary range, says Santiago. For starters, the Society for Human Resource Management maintains a Federal and state labor legislation tracking system.Recognize that market forces can trump Federal deregulation. In 2018 wages and employment classifications such as overtime exempt versus non-exempt likely will be driven more by a very tight labor market than by looser regulation. For the last year of Obamas presidency, everyone thought the FLSA overtime wage floor was going to go up, but that has died on the vine under Trump, says Todd Wulffson, managing partner at Carothers DiSante Freudenberger. But given near full employment, employers will be unlikely to rescind wage increases given in preparation for the FLSA revision.Anticipate fewer surprises from the NLRB. Employers can expect the National Labor Relations Board now comprised of two Republicans and two Democrats to be solidly in Republican hands after the president fills a vacancy in 2018, according to Wulffsson. With this shift, the NLRB will be less aggressive about asserting novel forms of worker claims against employers, he says. The effects in 2018 are likely to be lower costs and less risk in field ing a workforce. And that means your competitors may be more aggressive in staffing up than they have been for the last several years.Invest more in junior-level searches. In the wake of the 2007-2009 recession, it was relatively easy to recruit young talent with some experience. Not so in 2018. The hardest-to-fill jobs are the ones that ask for five years of experience, says Santiago. Because were in a candidate-driven marketplace, a candidate can be looking at five offers at once.Have a backup plan for the hardest-to-fill roles. You cant always get exactly what you want, especially if youre looking for professionals with rare technical skills. So be flexible. In cybersecurity, broader skills are often better, says Jeff Freiss, practice leader for cybersecurity at Global Executive Solutions Group. Because of the talent shortage, companies cant always hire a specialist. Ive been focusing on security engineers and security architects, who are more adaptable than specialists in specifi c programming languages, for example.
